Native Delicacies Forever

Cakes, pasta, pizza, hamburger, doughnuts – these are some of the foreign food we see everyday from fast food chains to restaurants we still considered as snacks because we are very used to eating full meal with rice. Native snack delicacies took the backstage and sometimes were not even recognized by very young generations who were westernized when it comes to eating western food. But to much older generations like me, native delicacies made from different local produce like rice, root crops and coconut is still the best. :)

The couple above vending the kakanin (native snack) they made.

Thankful that there are still people who patiently cook them and made us not forget what a rich culture we have when it comes to creating delectable food using local ingredients. You see no matter how I tried to lose weight, when I saw these *kakanins*, (maja blanca, sapin-sapin, biko, suman, kalamay- different type of rice cakes and cassava cake) my diet will always come to a halt, so I’m thinking of other ways like exercising often or to take this method = click here to learn more.

Cheese and Sausage Macaroni

We’re a  family that love spicy food especially my hubby. That’s why we never run out of chili sauce in the house. He even had a small chili tree planted in a pot so every time he cook or eat, he will just take a piece or two of chili  to be included in the menu. Our favorite chili sauce that’s why it is always included on our grocery list. We already tried putting it in my Cheese and Sausage Macaroni meal. It was cooked like a regular spaghetti recipe, instead of spaghetti pasta I used macaroni and I replaced ground beef with chopped sausage as meat for the sauce.

  • I chopped and sauteed sausage with garlic, onion and bell pepper in butter
  • then I add spaghetti sauce
  • simmer it and seasoned with salt and pepper.
  • I cooked the pasta as per instruction on the package.
  • I layered the pasta in a baking pan
  • put the sauce on top and added the shredded cheese
  • and baked it in a 300 degree in the oven
  • When the cheese melted , I sprinkled it with the red chili sauce.

It was not only spicy but brought out the flavor of my baked cheese and sausage macaroni.

When we ordered our pizza, we don’t use the chili sauce included in the package but our own  sauce. Now that Super Bowl season is almost here, we are planning to watch it all together with the whole family here at our home, if not available in cable we will view the live streaming of the game in the internet while gobbling our favorite Philly Cheese Steak Overload Pizza.

Buko Cheese Pie

Buko Pie is something you should never missed when you visit the province of Laguna, coconut being one of the major products of this province. They have perfected the taste of this delectable pie with young coconut meat as fillings and very famous on this.

I thought I have tasted the most delicious buko pie, but I was wrong when I tried this new variant  Buko and Cheese Pie by combining cheese and young coconut meat as fillings. It’s delicious before and more scrumptious now because of the added flavor from the cheese. Actually this one was brought as pasalubong by my son’s friend when she came back from vacationing at her hometown in Isabela province and the address of the store on the buko pie box  is Tarlac, so I guessed it’s not only in Laguna where you’ll find the best Buko Pie:)
